If the tooth is inaccurately arranged between the teeth of the two dental arches when they close together with each other as the jaw close is known as malocclusion. Tooth Misalignment can create a big oral problem for anyone.

  • Overcrowding: this is a normal oral issue and this dental issue is begun by an insufficiency of space, resulting in the tooth that is crooked and overlaps. It is the major general reason for orthodontic treatment between adults.
  • Overjet: is a dental complication in which the top teeth extend past from your lower teeth horizontally. These teeth can risk destruction and cause trouble with talking and eating.
  • Overbite: In this, your top part of teeth overlaps to your bottom front teeth. If there is an increase in overbite can cause your front teeth to bite down onto your gums.
  • Crossbite: This dental issue emerges when your top teeth bite inside your bottom teeth. It can occupy on one or both sides of your jaw and it can influence your back or front teeth.
  •  Anterior Crossbite: This is a dental problem in which your front teeth affect is known as an anterior crossbite.
  • Spacing: is a problem which is basically occupied when the space occupied between more than one teeth. The major cause of spacing is lost teeth, thumb sucking and tongue thrusting.

  •      Thumb sucking from an early age.
  •      Quick use of a pacifier after the age of 3.
  •      Improper shaped of teeth.
  •       Dental injuries that may be a big reason of misalignment of the jaw.
  •       Large use of bottle feeding in early age.
  •      A bad dental care that results in the incorrect fitting of crowns, braces or dental fillings.
  •      Swelling in the jaw or mouth.

Diagnosing and Classifying Malocclusions

Malocclusion of teeth is basically determined through routing dental tests. Your dentist will check your teeth and may carry out dental X-rays to find out if your teeth are correctly aligned. If malocclusion is noticed, it will be differentiated by its type.

There are three major types of malocclusion:
  • Class 1 Malocclusion: is spotted when the upper part of the teeth overlap the lower part. In this malocclusion, the bite is normal and the overlap is slight. Class 1 malocclusion is the most basic class of malocclusion.

  • Class 2 Malocclusion: is identified when several overbites are present. This issue is basically known as retrognathism. It means that the upper part and jaw significantly overlap the lower jaw and teeth.

  • Class 3 Malocclusion: is a dental problem in which several underbites is present. This dental problem second name is prognathism. It means that the lower jaw extends forward. The major reason behind this is the lower part to overlap the upper part and jaw.

Treatment of Malocclusion


Many persons with small malocclusion will not need any dental surgery. But, your dentists maybe recommend you to go to an orthodontist when your malocclusion problem is big. Your dental treatment completely depends on malocclusion. Your orthodontist may suggest you to various types of dental treatments.

Oral Treatment includes like as:

  • Use of braces to perfect the alignment of the tooth.
  • Removal of incorrect teeth to correct the overcrowding.
  • Bonding, Reshaping or Capping of teeth.
  • Do Surgery to reshape or shorten the jaw.
  • Use of wires or plates to stabilize the jaw bone.

How can we prevent from Malocclusion?


It is impossible to prevent from malocclusion because in most of the chances malocclusion is genetic. Family person of the young child should minimize the usage of pacifier and bottle. Because this also assists in minimizing the changes in the building of the jaw.  Early detection of malocclusion may assist cut down the time of therapy required to correct the issue.
